Coming Out the Other Side of the September Changes
If September felt like a whirlwind, you’re not alone. New funding, new funding rules, new EYFS, new HR and safeguarding practices, new Nutritional Guidance… ooh, and don’t forget needing to get your Climate Action Plan in place too!!! No wonder so many Nursery Owners were left wondering if they’d ever catch their breath! But as we settle into the autumn term, something important is happening: you’re coming out the other side.
Yes, there are still challenges. Yes, there are still uncertainties.
But this moment right now is where hopefully some clarity can start to return, systems begin to settle, and all the “reactive” chaos of September can shift into something more strategic.
Here’s what this phase really means for you:
1. You’ve already done the hardest part.
Adapting to the September changes while managing teams, staffing shortages, children, and families takes real resilience. You’ve weathered one of the sector’s biggest transitions in years.
2. Now is the time to review, refine, and reset.
Patterns are emerging, what worked, what didn’t, where are the pressure points, where have opportunities appeared? This is the perfect time to strengthen processes before the next wave of activity hits.
3. New Ofsted inspection changes are here
As Ofsted inspections resume under the updated inspection framework, it’s a timely reminder to reflect on our practice. With the new five-point report card and more frequent inspections, it’s important that your team are confident in their daily interactions. There has been a lot of positive feedback from those who have taken part in pilot inspections! (more to come later)
4. Sustainability is built between the storms.
While things are slightly calmer, use this moment to shore up the essentials: staffing structures, financial planning, occupancy strategy, communications, and your own wellbeing as a leader. And if you need accountability to do this, maybe January’s Thrive Cohort is for you?
5. Survival mode isn’t meant to be permanent.
If September pushed you to the edge, that doesn’t mean you’re failing, it means you’re human. But thriving requires stepping back from firefighting and shifting into intentional leadership again. Need a hand with this? Reach out.
6. Your next steps matter.
The sector is evolving quickly, but with the right strategy, support, and clarity, your nursery can come out stronger, more confident, and more prepared for what’s ahead, including the aftermath and knock-on effects of all these changes.
You’ve got through the most intense part. You’ve kept going.
Now it’s time to take a breath, take stock, and take back control of your business, one thoughtful step at a time.
If I can help you with that, do get in touch, I’d love to hear from you!
